A Guest story for a Halloween Scare

My friend, BJ Wingate, shared a delightful tale full of seasonal chills.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.   It is a flash fiction feast of under 1000 words.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween Tales

Halloween is my favorite holiday. Halloween is a holiday of fun, not going to church or seeing family, no stress about buying gifts or fixing a big meal and remembering your second cousin twice removed’s food sensitivities or tracking if your teenage niece is vegetarian, vegan, or raw foodist this year.

Halloween is a holiday of imagination, of make-believe.

In celebration of Halloween, I am sharing with you that I have two stories published in the Werewolves Versus zine, For those that don’t know, a zine, sometimes called an e-zine,  is a magazine online.  So this is a literary magazine released twice a year, except for special editions, that celebrates lycanthrope.  The zine is on a pay-what-you-want model. Many people take it for free and I hope they enjoy it then come back and buy more, so please consider paying the cost of a coffee or a doughnut. The proceeds are split among the writers and artist.

I wrote the suspense-filled “No Mercy” for the Werewolves VS Fascism special edition which benefits the Southern Poverty Law Center, and which has a mandatory donation of at least $1.  Set in Mussolini’s Italy, a black shirt officer attempts to seduce a Jewish widow.  Let’s just say it ends badly for him.

In Werewolves versus Hollywood, I did the impossible; I wrote a romantic comedy. Those of you who know me personally can take heart that it is still a lycanthropic romantic comedy, so I have not completely lost my mind. In a story that reminds me of Shakespeare’s plays on the fallacies of young love, “Sugar and Spice” features a couple in love making all the wrong choices, sacrificing their happiness in exchange for the happiness of the person they love, instead of actually talking to each other.  Shocking concept, communication.

So if you want to get into the Halloween spirit, check out an edition or two or six of Werewolves Versus. ( Burning willpower points to not close with a bad pun like “you will have a howlin’ good read” — ACK! I failed my roll.)

Buy Werewolves Versus Hollywood  “Sugar and Spice”

Buy Werewolves Versus Fascism “No Mercy”

Or contribute – submissions are open for next edition, Werewolves Versus Fashion, and work with  Angela Quinton, an amazing editor.–UOAa2AlKJmCwnCZPhqYw/edit#_=_

Until next time,

Happy HOWL-oween !!
